Hey Leah -

Well, I don't work at Google, but I'm really fairly sure that if they won't let you map a root domain to your app, that's something Google imposes themselves. It's not a restriction imposed by DNS.

Great article! I don't know much about DNS (I usually just follow other's instructions) so your explanation was perfect.

As for Robert's comment about the root record - I know that Google App Engine won't let you map a root domain to your app. Could that just be the software they're using? It seems super odd and gave me the (probably) wrong impression too.

Hi Chris,

This is a great post, and one I'll use as reference for training my team here. DNS training can be tough to introduce, but you explain it clearly.

It is surprising the number of staff at hosting companies who seem completely unfamiliar with CNAMEs as well.

Cheers,
Laura

@Robert, I actually don't believe that's necessarily true, though I think BIND may require such things. A point I didn't get into is that CNAMEs really aren't properly specified in the RFC, so different software can (and does) handle them differently. But just as a proof of concept, my friend Mark Trammell has his personal domain pointed to Virb. Here's the DNS info for his domain:

chl@chris-leas-macbook-pro-15:~$ host marktrammell.com
marktrammell.com is an alias for virb.com.
virb.com has address 64.207.128.132
virb.com mail is handled by 10 mail.virb.com.

Now, it's possible I'm wrong here. CNAMEs are something that I generally set up when I need them, check once to make sure it's working how I think it should, and then stop thinking about. But if I'm reading this right you can CNAME just foo.com by itself to another domain. Thanks for bringing this up though!
